Wow, it looks like my diary is at the top of the “Trending” list! Thanks for the support everybody! Does anybody know why my diary is at the top? Just curious because I know it’s not because I have the most recs, as there are several on the trending list that have more.
Joe Biden is a kind, well-mannered man and my one fear has always been that his strong desire to find common ground and support bipartisanship would prevent him from waging the kind of fight needed against the dark forces that control today’s Republican Party.
A recent article in the Washington Post detailing recent speeches has given my hope that my fears may be unfounded. It quotes speeches from recent public appearances in Arizona, where he honored the late Senator John McCain, and Philadelphia. Some highlights:
“There’s something dangerous happening in America now,” Biden said. “There’s an extremist movement that does not share the basic beliefs in our democracy.” He added, “We should all remember: Democracies don’t have to die at the end of a rifle. They can die when people are silent, when they fail to stand up or condemn the threats to democracy.”
“Trump says the Constitution gave him the right to do whatever he wants as president,” Biden said. “I’ve never even heard a president say that in jest. Not guided by the Constitution or by common service and decency toward our fellow Americans, but by vengeance and vindictiveness.”
“This MAGA threat is a threat to the brick and mortar of our democratic institutions, but it’s also a threat to the character of our nation that gives our Constitution life,” “This MAGA threat is a threat to the brick and mortar of our democratic institutions, but it’s also a threat to the character of our nation that gives our Constitution life,” he said.
He then traveled to Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and more directly took on Trump, saying he and his followers “represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”
“Very few of us will ever be asked to endure what John McCain endured,” Biden said. “But all of us are being asked right now, what will we do to maintain our democracy? Will we, as John wrote, never quit? Will we not hide from history, but make history? Will we put partisanship aside and put country first? I say we must.”
It is also good to note that WAPO in a manner very favorable to the president by simply stating the facts of the current situation. They should be given major kudos for this.
I submitted one comment to this on-line article:
Bravo Mr. President.
I find it truly amazing, and more than a little distressing, that the current opinion polls have the race between Trump and Biden so close, with Trump actually slightly in the lead in some cases. Either the polls are really inaccurate or a frighteningly large number of people in this country are very, very stupid and/or evil. I really hope it's the former.
Yeah, I really fucking hope it’s the former. Considering how close we are to descending into fascism, I’m glad President Biden is stepping up so forcefully.
