This is just a thought, and if it’s occurred to anyone else, I’ll delete it.
But….
Supposing there is at least one person on Trump’s legal defense team that isn’t suffering from a severe case of crano-rectal inversion. I know that’s a bit of a leap, and the person certainly wouldn’t be Trump himself, but suppose there is one.
They must realize that in a court of law, Trump doesn’t have a ghost of a chance. With all the evidence coming out, and his own tendency to ready, fire, aim in verbal volleys, he may fight a delaying action, but in the end, he’s screwed.
What do you plan for then? What’s the fallback position?
The only fallback position is the court of public opinion. Trump can still wield power, play the hero in alt-history, and even evade jail, if he can keep his fan base glued to him or perhaps even grow it a bit. If he can do that, he’s certainly got the GOP by the nads, at any rate.
But how does he do that? Some of course will stick through thick and thin, but for the rest… he’s the sort of guy you throw into a stagnant pond, and the pond scum flows away from him as fast as it can scramble. How do you maintain and build sympathy for the man who’s done something to disgust everyone?
The answer is, create an image of persecution. Make it seem as if he wasn’t treated fairly. Then evidence as to his general unfitness to be wasting good oxygen will simply be ignored. Poor Donald! The dice were loaded! They [Obama, Hillary, the Jooz, etc. etc.] had it in for him all the time!
And what’s a good way to do that? Make it seem he wasn’t allowed to defend himself. That the deck was stacked. That George Soros ordered his destruction from the sub-basement of a castle in Transylvania. Something along those lines.
And what gives the perception of unfairness to most people? If a defendant in a legal case isn’t allowed to defend him or herself. If every time he or she reaches out for a legal response, the System stamps on his or her fingers.
Here is where hiring Ghouliani is actually a pretty smart move. And the more corrupt and compromised he is, the better.
If Nosferatu’s understudy is on the verge of being sucked into the case himself, or can even create that perception, it will look as if poor old Trumpy-wumpy is being eaten by the swamp creatures. Trump’s already had one lawyer taken out by a justifiable but seldom seen maneuver — seldom seen because it’s hard to make it look fair. If he loses a second lawyer that way, watch for the pity party to begin forthwith.
