Back in the early 1800's, the town of Apalachicola, Florida was a boomtown port. Surprisingly back then, Apalachicola was the third busiest Gulf coast port behind New Orleans and Mobile. The business of the port of Apalachicola in the early 1800's was cotten.
Apalchicola was a very protected port which probably was why people settled there. To this day, Apalachicola has been relatively untouched by hurricanes, much of which is due to its location and topography. But to get to Apalachicola was not an easy task. Apalachicola is located on the mainland (north side) of the Apalachee Bay. The Bay is shallow and is protected by a series of barrier islands.
Still, in the early 1800's, Apalachicola was one of the few places to be in Florida.
