Back in the early days of the internet I bought our first computer for home use. My wife was totally against it.
“What good is that thing? Why would you waste so much money?” she asked.
I explained that I could bring work home and the kids could do school projects. I also told her about using the internet for research. She scoffed at the idea. I showed her how to do searches but forgot to show her how to create bookmarks. Big mistake.
She had been talking about getting a dog. I arrived home a few days after explaining how the internet worked to find over three hundred pages that she’d printed out. I remember my poor HP inkjet printer dying shortly after.
She decided that we were going to get a retired from racing greyhound. His track name was Ripper, but we renamed him Mac. He turned out to be a 35 MPH couch potato.
As he settled into his post racing life we found out more about how he and his fellow racers were treated. Saying it was horrible just scratches the surface. There’s an article published by Salon that goes into some detail.
As the tracks saw increased profits, reports surfaced that dogs stayed confined for 20 hours a day, trained past exhaustion and were fed tainted meat.
When Lyman first started greyhound rescue over two decades ago, she said, a kennel would close, and scores of dogs needed to be saved. “You’d go get all your volunteers together and get as many as you can,” she said, “and the others – I don’t know what happened to them.”

The others are either shot and killed or abandoned by the side of the road. Many that are abandoned die of exposure because of their thin coats.
Mac was a great dog. He never met a stranger. If you’re looking for a great companion...
