struggle against powerful, unfair, and uncaring: governments, monopoly business, the Church, etc.

You've hit it on the head when you say that taking care of your family in no way translates into Republican "family values" of anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-everyone.

Instead, generally speaking, they understand how repressive power is.  They understand how unfair a migrant worker overlord is.  They understand the struggle to have a simple comfortable life.

There is absolutely nothing in the Republican policy book that appeals to a broad cross section of Latinos - even older ones.

All that said, Obama really needs to put some effort into aligning his administrations actions, policies and attitudes with his campaign promises.  The continual stream of unfair deportations (people who have no other fault than being here without papers), of harsh detention camp treatment and trigger-happy border guards just needs to stop.

He stated he wants to reform the immigration laws.  God knows that needs to be done - they are an incredible and incomprehensible mess even for expert immigration lawyers.  But his own administration can make many policy adjustments to show a more benevolent face to those they deal with.  And that should be under his control now.
