  •  Democrats should fight that through initiative (27+ / 0-)

There are a number of states where Republicans are in charge in the state capitols, while Obama wins the state's electoral votes.  They've gerrymandered those states to a fare-thee-well, and are now trying to game the Electoral College to give themselves a chance at presidential elections they'll never otherwise win again.

Democrats in those states with initiatives should promote a package of the following:

    1.  Raise the minimum wage to 5% above the Federal poverty level for a 40 hour worker with a family of 4.  Put in place over 5 years, that'd be $12.88 an hour for a 48 week workyear.

    2.  Direct that the state's electoral votes go to the winner of the national popular vote.  Some efforts are being made in this direction, requiring it go into effect when states totaling more than 270 EV's pass the law.  Not sure this is even needed.

    3.  Nonpartisan redistricting for Congressional and state legislative districts, using the Arizona or Iowa models.  It should be done for the first election following the initiative passing, and then every 10 years.

The minimum wage is the classic Democratic wedge issue, and would help bring out votes for good government reforms.  Especially when contrasted against Republican efforts to steal elections.

    •  OH used the initiative process to get a (7+ / 0-)

redistricting proposal on the ballot in 2012.  Unfortunately, Republicans were able to throw enough $$$ and lies at it to get it defeated.  Collecting enough signatures is hard work, but I hope we give it another try.  Probably need something easier to understand and thus more difficult to fool voters.

      •  Yeah (4+ / 0-)

I wasn't there, but can understand how that initiative would be lost in the presidential and senate races.  Proponents should use Husted and Ken Blackwell as poster boys for dishonest, thieving government, and put the opponents on the deep defensive.

I don't see that one as the draw for voters -- the minimum wage would do that.  The other initiatives would use the draw to rob Republicans of their ability to steal elections.

    •  I was satisfied with California's redistricting.. (0+ / 0-)

..commission, and how we got here. And the results, so far.

We could be on a roll. If we could get the financing..

But the citizenry of "Kallefornia" will get "Austerity" because they can't get a loan from the people with the plates that print the money. And the "super-secrit" code to create money out of thin air, send the printing order to the presses, and then load in on pallets and airlift it to Iraq.

We have a fine airport in Sacramento. Land the next one here.

    •  AZ has independent redistricting. If we can do it (0+ / 0-)

here, it can be done anywhere.
