I don't know.... There is something that is missing from this calculus. There was no backbone in this fight to support the filibuster. No coordination. Oh, in this forum and its cousins, there was plenty of fight! Man, the place was hopping. But the leadership wasn't there. Reid wasn't on board. Byrd was AWOL. The fight was left to the Roaring left of Kerry and Kennedy.
Something is missing. Maybe.... Follow me a bit more.
Maybe there is more here. I keep having the feeling that there is more to Reid than the hapless stewardship of this issue.
Does anyone else get the feeling that there is a bigger deal here. That maybe there really is a bipartisan backroom conspiracy. That maybe the Dems agreed to pull punches for Alito, if the repubs give up their defense of BushCo.
Maybe it is crazy, but there are many Republicans that are coming out very heavy against Bush right now. Think Hagel and his Sunday rant against the wiretapping scandal. Think of the upcoming investigations in the Senate. Think of Bush and Abramoff in a loving embrace. Think of the fact that Bush cannot give anymore, now that he has given the court to the right and faces no more elections nor issues. He has basically used up his allotment of mojo, and the walls may well be closing in on him.
It just seems fishy to me that the SenDems would fight so meekly (mid 20s votes against cloture!!!) for something so obviously in their favor to fight.
It's late and the day is ending. But I just cannot escape the feeling that Reid is really hiding something more.
