The Constitutional Convention is currently in recess to see how to pick up the pieces, after caving into religious right pressure.
This past week, the Supreme Judicial Court chastised the Lege for not giving this hackneyed tripe an up-or-down vote. All the while, noting that there's no consequence in the MA Constitution if they don't vote (indeed, they haven't at least 12 times before). Worse, the Bay State wingnut faction filed a federal lawsuit against the individual legislators because they voted to recess in November.
So they've caved. The vote came in 131-61; to bring this forward to the 2008 Legislative session required only 50 votes. And while the anti-marriage-equality faction lost ground by at least 3, that's not 49, dammit! And we need to get it down to 49 before the next ConCon so that we can put a fork in this already.
We're waiting for one of the livebloggers to post a roll call of who voted how; unfortunately, the Lege no longer broadcasts on either 'GBH or cable access, and the webcast [WindowsMedia Only] is not really functional, as noted by the ongoing complaints at BlueMassGroup. I certainly couldn't get it to work. Which blows, since it's part of what I do for a living (media streaming, load balancing, load testing, simulation coding, etc.).
This is a tragedy in the making, folks. The worst case scenario is that it not only removes marriage rights for part of our population, but it propels that idot Mittens into the White House.
