Kathy Griffin hilariously skewers celebrities who thank Jesus for their awards and gets censored by E! for her trouble.
According to CNN, Griffin accepted her creative arts Emmy last weekend with her characteristic wit and humor:
In her speech, Griffin said that "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."
She went on to hold up her Emmy, make an off-color remark about Christ and proclaim, "This award is my god now!"
The comedian's remarks were condemned Monday by Catholic League President Bill Donohue, who called them a "vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech."
"Hate speech"? Why is it atheists and agnostics have to gracefully suffer through what we believe to be inane superstition when a celebrity points to the sky and thanks the Lord but Kathy Griffin gets slammed for hilariously and deftly expressing her beliefs?
If it weren't for American Taliban members like Bill Donohue, I doubt this would have even been an issue. But it is, and those of us who believe in freedom of expression and civil liberties should contact E! and let them know we are greatly disappointed in their decision to censor Ms. Griffin's speech.
UPDATED: Thanks to everyone for putting this on the Recommended List! Regardless of our own personal opinions, I hope as progressives we can gather around Kathy and stand up for minority viewpoints in the media.
