According to news reports, in the wake of a dismal 0.14% showing in the Iowa caucuses, Uncommitted will be announcing a withdrawal from the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination.
CNN is reporting that unnamed sources close to the Uncommitted campaign are possibly confirming that Uncommitted will probably withdraw from the race tomorrow, if not later, or perhaps sooner.
"Uncommitted got into this race to make a difference, maybe, of some sort, perhaps, and if the voters of America aren't ready to not be ready to commit to Uncommitted, then there might or might not be any point in carrying on with this campaign," said one prominent unnamed official source. "At the very least, Uncommitted is going to have to consider rethinking the viability of committing to continue with this campaign over the next period of time in the indefinite future."
While many Washington insiders have praised Uncommitted as a candidate capable of uniting Democrats and Republicans, others have complained that Uncommitted has actually consistently polled higher among Republicans than among potential Democratic voters. "Frankly, I'm not sure what Uncommitted really hoped to accomplish by running in this campaign," noted one prominent observer. "The Democratic base seems exceptionally committed this cycle — they are not at all interested in hearing Uncommitted's message of ennui and doubt."
Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, proprietor of the liberal web site Daily Kos, blamed voter outreach for Uncommitted's poor performance. "Uncommitted has been the polar opposite of a people-powered candidate. There was no grass-roots movement of people going out there to work for Uncommitted, and no real effort to reach out to local activists."
Other analysts have been quick to criticize Uncommitted's campaign style. "Uncommitted has displayed less enthusiasm for campaigning than anyone besides Fred Thompson," observed one expert. "Uncommitted just never seemed to get really dedicated to the prospect of running for President."
Reached for comment, officials within Uncommitted's campaign refused to make any direct comment, referring reporters to Uncommitted's official campaign web site. Still, sources are reporting that Uncommitted does not have any campaign appearances currently scheduled for New Hampshire or any of the other January primary campaign states.
