During my daily perusal of political sites, I came across an interesting tidbit that has made the rounds. Dr. Rice, The Devil's Handmaiden, is courting Republican Nominee John McCain to be included on his Presidential ticket as Vice-President. Although the former Stanford University Provost has been known as unflappable, intelligent, and highly gifted, this pick still reeks of the far reach of Mr. Bush's hand if it were to be so.
Crooks and Liars has the lowdown. Even before Mr. McCain was ever named a possible nominee for President, there has been groups which urged Dr. Rice to run. Except, during those times, she had politely refused.
I guess power, as they say, is a great seducer.
It should be lauded that she pioneered her way into the White House. However, one cannot ignore what she did there as well as the stands she has taken. From her close relationship with Mr. Bush to her complicity to lies that led up to the Iraq War, it is hard to think that this might be a dream ticket for the White House. A vote for Mr. McCain and Dr. Rice, if it is so, would be taking the country back in the wrong direction.
It is also worth noting that Senator Barack Obama's popularity in the nation has propelled her (and possibly the Republican Party) of this move. After all, if Mr. Obama picks a woman as his running mate (and to heal wounds in the Democratic Party, it might be Sen. Clinton), it would only be natural that the conservatives would do the same in the effort to keep their power base in Washington.
That is something that we cannot afford as a nation if we want to heal our wounds from an unwinnable war to a sinking economy. Dr. Rice may represent the fact that "progress" has been made in terms of making the White House more representative of America, but her policies have done nothing but set us all back in terms of diversity, civil rights and civil liberties. To put her on the ticket would ring hollow because not only she would be there to continue the Bush Doctrine and to push the neo-con's cause, she would stay silent on other matters that affect the populace such as getting our manufacturing base started once again, easing the difficulties of paying for college, affirmative action and lessening the gap between the rich and the poor.
As Secretary of State, Dr. Rice has done nothing but perpetuate the colonialist attitudes of empire in waging a war against brown-skinned people in a country that did not strike back at the United States. From her cold, aloof stare, she has not moved one inch to relieve the suffering of not only the civilians caught in the detention centers or the streets let alone for the soldiers who are on the front lines fighting in the war. She has not voiced any support for the veterans coming home who suffer from PTSD, brain injuries and other ailments which disable their body and mind.
If anything my contempt of her began the day she shopped for Feragamo shoes and bought tickets to Spamalot while people died in the deluge of the Gulf Coast. Not even the comments she had written in response to Mr. Obama's speech on race, could lessen that feeling.
I wonder how she sleeps at night.
