While walking my dog today at Sunset Beach, NC (near NC/SC line) I saw a contractor's panel truck (with ladders mounted on the roof) with an 8.5 x 11-sized sign mounted prominently in the back window:
"Never Forget 9/11:
vote AGAINST
BARAK HUSSEIN OBAMA"
There was BTW another smaller sticker on the bumper of the truck (it had South Carolina plates): "Member of South Carolina Highway Patrolman's Association". Which may or may not indicate that the owner of the truck is a retired SC Highway patrolman.
QUESTION: What, if anything should any of us prudently do when we encounter this sort of thing?
MY RESPONSE: I went back to my beach house a block away and wrote a note on a 4x6" sized notepad page:
"You have every right to:
- disagree with him
- vote against him;
BUT:
This is
- offensive
- shameful
- racist
CRAP
I will NOT do any business with you."
- And I taped it to the back window of his van right next to his offensive sign. I also looked for a business name/phone number printed on the van, but unfortunately it was parked in a way that made it untenable to access the sides of the van (car close by on one side, dense vegetation on the other).
When I returned to tape my note to the back of the van, I was more than a bit nervous about sparking an ugly, potentially physically threatening confrontation if the owner had come out of the house at that point (the contractor was probably inside working or discussing whatever the project was with the houseowner at the time). But I decided that on the first full day of Obama's nomination, it was high time to confront this sort of crap and convey the message that we MUST stand up and confront this kind of racially offensive crap, and convey clearly that while we can respect people who prefer Sen. McCain and the views he represents, and disagrees with Obama - THIS IS DEEPLY OFFENSIVE AND TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE to the majority of people, including especially people this guy might want as business clients.
