I was listening to Randi Rhodes on my way to class today. She was discussing Prop 8 and why she thought it will be overturned. Namely it violates California's Constitution for how to amend the Constitution.
But this got me thinking. Did the right-wing give progressives the vehicle to overturn hate and bigotry throughout the entire country?
Follow me below the fold to hear me out.
Now I know there have been many of diaries written about Prop 8. It seems to be the way most people are coping with their post election lives. And I am hardly the best person to be discussing this topic. I'm a 25 year old white straight male from Ohio. I have a couple of gay friends from college but I have never experienced the hatred and bigotry towards them that seems to be manifesting itself in other areas.
Now after listening to Randi, where she talked about not only the laws governing how California amends its Constitution (Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounded like a two-thirds vote of the State Legislature was needed) but she also discussed the Loving v. Virginia case overturning laws making interracial marriage illegal.
There is no doubt in my mind that this is going to be challenged in court. And in the spirit of Loving v. Virginia not only can this overturn California's law, but it can overturn all of the state laws passed banning gay marriage (Ohio, Texas, Michigan, etc.)
So I guess I want to thank the conservative wing-nuts. Not only will they fail to vote hatred and bigotry into the California Constitution but they may have set the stage for all states to have their gay marriage bans overturned.
Maybe I'm just being hopeful that this country will one day stop trying to oppress a group of people just because they are "different." One of the main reasons I've become a Democrat is because it is the party of inclusion.
