As a relative newcomer to DailyKos (I joined in late summer), I found myself extremely uncomfortable at the level of venom spewing about Bristol Palin's son's birth yesterday.
Please follow me past the fold.
When Sarah Palin announced that her daughter was pregnant, Barak Obama immediately and vehemently declared that children are off-limits.
I am painfully aware of the Republican Party's hypocrisy concerning marriage, sex, and abortion. As a child, I was raised "deep in the heart of Texas"--surrounded by Southern Baptist "friends" who were convinced I was going to hell merely because I attended a non-born-again-style church. The religious right and the Republicans have worked hard to place a morality of "right" and "wrong" upon the entire American population. This has been both damaging and dangerous.
From where I sit, we--the liberal voice of America--will not win support with venom and condemnation. I would hope we could offer Bristol Palin our very best: support in what seems to be a very dysfunctional family system. Her newborn child's birth should not be the cause of laughter and glee; his birth should give us pause as we discuss ways to reach out to a nation filled with Bristol Palins and young Tripps.
Tripp Johnston is an innocent child born into a cynical world. Let us offer him the best of America: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
