Wow. It never fails to surprise when a member of the modern Republican Party speaks the truth. It happens so rarely that it must be noted.
Sen. George Voinovich will not run for re-election, and one of the big reasons may well be that his party is now overrun by the Southern Redneck faction of the party. In a wide-ranging discussion with the Columbus Dispatch Voinovich stated that the GOP's biggest problem is:
We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It’s the southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, ‘These people, they’re southerners. The party’s being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?
Indeed. What does the GOP have to offer Ohio anymore? The wheels continue to fall off the Republi-bus. One after another. The Southern Strategy edges ever closer to its logical and ultimate conclusion, as the GOP becomes a less relevant regional faction for racists, truth deniers, Christianists and the NRA.
Gotta give some props to any Senator who's willing to name names when calling out the clowns on his own side of the aisle. Can't wait to hear the reaction from DeMint and Coburn. Will they demand to see Voinovich's birth certificate? Did they refuse to pay him off? Who knows? But this is sure to lead to some great political coverage on Rachael's show tonight I'll wager.
Who will be the next rat to abandon their stinking sinking ship?
UPDATE: The wingers never fail to amuse. Here's 2 awesome comments posted to the story in the Columbus Dispatch:
Obama is not a US Citizen. And: NOT THE REAL PRESIDENT. Voinovich may denigrate southerners, but they're the only ones who will go toe to toe on this. This is a key kitchen table issue for voters, women and children. I know it is at my house.

Yes, I'm sure that's the big issue for all the women and child voters at your house, Anton. Though I would expect the ACORN is also a big issue for the voting block you are breeding.
The problem with the GOP is too many Voinoviches, McCains, and Grahams. Gadflies. Opportunists. Sellouts. Directionless, spineless, thoughtless, and ignorant.
DeMint and Coburn are about the only two conservatives left in DC. We need many, many more like them and fewer of the centrist and center-left GOP "leaders" we've seen post-Reagan.

And here we hopefully see the lesson that the GOP has learned in the Obama era. More far-right conservatism is the only path for the GOP. Go git 'em y'all. Yehaw. More Michelle Bachmann.
