I'm just taking a break now from flyering and handing out literature all over campus at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Unfortunately, there's quite little excitement in the crowd; turnout all over campus is low. For instance, turnout at one dorm was 150 (out of 3000 registered) an hour ago. For comparison, 1000 people voted there in 2008 (and 500 in 2006.) There are "I Voted" stickers throughout the crowd, but not in large quantities, and a surprisingly large minority who professed their vote for Republicans. Turnout will probably pick up around now as classes end, but I don't think it would go over 2006 levels (and even reaching that would be quite iffy.)
Interest in the election hasn't been high throughout this year. During registration season, our clipboards were summarily ignored by the rest of the student body. Last night, we had a pre-election rally featuring most of the statewide candidates; only perhaps 50 dedicated volunteers showed up. Unfortunately, it looks like Jocelyn Benson's secret weapon (young people) has failed her; I'm getting quite pessimistic on her chances now, which is quite depressing since she's the person on the ballot who I most wanted to win, by far.
I expect turnout throughout the rest of Ann Arbor to be higher, but not by much. Michigan looks like it'll be going solid red on the statewide level now. But Dingell should still win easily, and Schauer by a decent margin - the last two public polls have had him up 6 and 7. I've spent hours canvassing for him in Jackson, and from the responses I've gotten and what I've heard, his message is playing surprisingly well. Gary Peters I'm less sure of. We're making a surprisingly strong play for Hoekstra's old seat, but it's just too awful a year for that, and Stupak's seat is probably gone too (though it should still be close.)
I'm leaving to do more work, so I won't be able to respond to any comments/questions you might have. But I hope the lookout is better in your area.
P.S. If you're wondering when I voted, the answer is by absentee ballot last week.
