Romney to Sean Hannity last night:
"I believe we're in a recovery mode, finally," Romney told Fox News' Sean Hannity. "I think it's likely things will get better."
Craniums are exploding in Wingnuttia. It's an article of faith on the right that the US Economy is in a shambles and it's all Obama's fault. Hundreds of millions of advertising dollars are being spent creating 60-second doom and gloom pieces with black and white, fuzzy scenes of urban devastation, cleverly coded with subtle hot-button race signals, featuring slightly balding middle-aged white guys grimly staring into the camera with their arms folded across their chests, all accompanied by music that sounds like the intro to the "Walking Dead."
NO, ECONOMY GETTING WORSE! ARGHHHH!!!! GETTING WORSE!!!!!
Don't know how he walks this back.

Reality makes clear that the dubious claim just isn't true, but the Republican presidential hopeful repeated it anyway, ad nauseum, in nearly every speech, interview, and public appearance. It became the central point of the former governor's entire campaign: Obama made the economy worse, and Romney would make it better.
* * *
For Romney, who likes to pretend the economy is his strong point, this is especially problematic. He can argue Obama made the economy "worse," and he can concede the "we're in a recovery mode," but he can't say both at the same time, at least if he wants to be taken seriously.
Mitt, if the economy is getting better, what the hell do we need you for?
Mitt, if we're in a recovery, doesn't that mean the President's economic policies were successful?
Mitt, your party opposed everything this President did. Doesn't this mean they were wrong?
Mitt, if the economy is getting better, you should make a donation here.
Complete interview here. Notice how Hannity re-directs him.
ROMNEY: Well, I think a race is always tough to remove an incumbent president. He has the power of running policy in the intervening months, he will probably take actions to try and shore up his favorable numbers prior to the election. But I think he’s real trouble. I believe we're in recovery mode finally --
HANNITY: You really think so?
ROMNEY: It's hard to know. No one can predict precisely what's going to happen in the economy, but I think its likely things will get better. Look, no recession has gone on forever. They get better.
This has taken much longer to recover from in part because of the policies of this president. Everything he has done has made it less attractive for an entrepreneur to start a business or for a current business to hire more people. Whether it was Dodd-Frank or pushing card check or cap and trade or higher taxes, higher marginal tax rates, all these things, Obamacare, all of them make it less likely for a business to grow. That’s why so many people are suffering today.
