I've been stunned lately by how far down the rabbit hole America seems to have gotten. Yesterday it was Steven D's fine diary New Crime: Owning Home While Black, while today's outrage hails from Connecticut of all places.

For those of you that thought that public education was a right I have news for you. From the article:
A mother who pleaded guilty to fraudulently enrolling her six-year-old son in the wrong school district has been sentenced to five years in prison
As if there was any lingering doubt about the "skin tone" of the mother, she just happens to be black and had the temerity to send her child to the good school district. Being homeless she used the address of her babysitter and sent her kid across the tracks in an attempt to better his life outcome. Obviously, that was a mistake :p
How dare a woman living in a van think that she could steal the educational benefits destined from her betters. Now she is going to jail, her child is probably going into foster care, and the people of Connecticut get to brag about how they live in the land of the free with liberty and justice for all (except of course poor brown people, but hey who's counting).
What else is there to say about this? Apparently you can criminalize knowledge now and that if someone tries to make a better life for their child they can be thrown in prison for their efforts.
These aren't the ideals of a free and civilized society. The fact that we are now so greedy and hateful that we jail our citizens for trying to make their children's lives better, frankly, disgusts me.
Well done Connecticut.
