If you'll remember, yesterday I mentioned that quack psychologist and longtime anti-gay activist Paul Cameron was a guest on a recent edition of "Crosstalk," a show that airs on VCY America, a conservative Christian radio network based in Milwaukee. Cameron claimed that President Obama now supports marriage equality because he's a closet gay himself--and thus implied that no one who's "really" straight can support gay rights. Believe it or not, that wasn't the most offensive part of that show. Not by a longshot. The show's host, Jim Schneider, allowed a caller to go into an ugly racist spiel on-air.
At around the 33:24 mark of the show, which aired this past Thursday, a caller from Waukesha, Wisconsin came on and said, "They gave blacks equal rights and that was a bad path and now look where we are. If I don’t feel like I want to hire a black man for my business I’m in all sorts of trouble, and now it’s going to be some homo who is gonna have to get a job because I can’t do nothing about it." You'd have thought that Schneider wouldn't have allowed him to even get that far as "now look where we are." Oh no. He let this mouthbreather continue his screed. I listened to the very end of the show, hoping somehow that either Schneider or Cameron would condemn this. No such luck. Don't take my word for it--listen for yourself here.
To my mind, this represents a complete failure at the most basic level. Unless VCY America has a really good--and I mean a really good--explanation for how this was allowed to air, heads need to roll.
I'm left wondering how in the world this clown managed to get past the call screener. In any normal world, he wouldn't have even been allowed on the air. And even if he had, like I mentioned earlier, Schneider should have cut him off immediately. But he didn't.
Crash VCY's inbox at vcy@vcyamerica.org--and tell your friends as well. Even your conservative ones--no matter where you stand on gay rights, this sort of racism is unacceptable. Period, full stop.
