Here's the gist of the standoff over solving the fiscal cliff:
Democrats: We don't want to, nor are we going to, extend the "Bush tax cuts" for those making over $250,000.
Republicans: We are open to more revenue (just not allowing taxes
to go up for millionaires), but insist there be spending cuts.
Democrats: What spending cuts do you want?
Republicans: You tell us.
Democrats: Spending cuts are your idea. And frankly, cutting social safety net programs isn't what we want to do. So where do you want to cut?
Republicans: You tell us.
