Today is the day to talk about the children who will no longer be living their lives. About the parents whose entire worlds will be changed forever. And about a community that will be shattered for years to come.
We are talking about having a policy discussion not even three hours after 20 schoolchildren were murdered. Even the most expedited of policy changes take weeks. Right now, TODAY, this is not about any of us here. This is about the people in that school, in that community. This is about the lives that will no longer be lived. I can't even imagine what those families are going through.
I haven't been as detailed as I wanted and I really am sympathetic to the sentiments a lot of people are having about this w/r/t gun control but I have to get back to work right now. But this is pretty much what I'm thinking at this moment.
EDIT: I want to say one thing quickly: If Obama does not seriously address this issue some time in the next few days, he will deserve all the outrage I'm seeing here today. But right now, as I said, mere hours after 20 schoolkids were murdered, there are other places where attention should be focused. The primary one, of course, being ensuring the immediate safety of other schools in the area.
This was primarily in response to seeing so many politically charged comments so soon after such a tragedy. But this is a political blog, so I suppose it's to be expected.
