The best that we can hope for appears to be a government shutdown. I am not sanguine as to the President's willingness to follow through on his commitment to not negotiate over the debt ceiling. We cannot allow hostage taking to continue. I am quite worried that the President will try to avoid the government shutdown or default by negotiating over the debt ceiling . The saving grace is that the most he will offer them is the chained CPI cut ( which I oppose for obvious reasons). That will not be enough to entice republicans to raise the debt ceiling.
The politico piece is a lot of right wing propaganda - I am going to quickly point out some major problems with their narrative. However, using an iPhone touch screen makes it difficult to address their errors with the depth and links that I normally would use.
First, our current deficit / debt problem is mostly due to republican policies : 1.Clinton left a surplus 2. The costs of the tax cuts for the wealthy , their wars, and their Medicare Part D brought most of the deficit, 3. The Great Bush Recession hurt our tax revenue, 4. US Treasury bonds are still the world's safest, most preferred investment , 5. Job creation not deficits are the real issue , 6. Austerity is killing Europe and won't work here, 7. SS adds nothing to the deficit now, 8. Seniors and the poor are not the ones who can or should shoulder getting rid of our debt .
To state the obvious: raising the debt ceiling only enables us to pay the bills for the stuff Congress already got.
From reading the politico piece, it appears clear that we absolutely will have a government shutdown or default if President Obama does not cave. I certainly hope that he does not, but I am honestly worried that he will.
