Think Progress has put out a great video showing just how disengenuous the GOP is when it comes to the spending cuts they claim Obama hasn't made. Over and over again we hear how the president isn't serious about cutting spending, even though he has already agreed to far more in spending cuts than he has to revenue increases - much to the chagrin of progressives in his own party, I might add.
The video points out the following:
1). that in the spring 2011 budget deal, Obama agreed to $585 billion in spending cuts with zero increased revenue.
2). that in the summer 2011 debt ceiling deal, Obama agreed to an additional $860 billion in spending cuts with zero increased revenue. That brings us to a grand total of $1.445 trillion in spending cuts with zero additional revenue.
3). that in the 2012 fiscal cliff deal, Obama did actually get $630 billion in additional revenue with the expiration of the Bush tax cuts for those making more than $450,000 per year, plus another $30 billion in spending cuts.
That means, in toto, Republicans got almost $1.5 trillion dollars in spending cuts while Obama got less than half of that in revenue. Yet, Republicans act as if Obama has never agreed to any spending cuts whatsoever. Where the hell are the David Gregorys and George Stephanopolouses of the world when the Republicans harp on this obviously phony meme? That's an essentially rhetorical question since I think we all know the real answer.
At any rate, I think it would be great to spread this video around. It's simple, concise, factual and dead-on accurate.
