There have been a lot of moments recently when I've doubted our move to New Zealand. The same tired conservative tropes hold sway here, just like they do in the rest of the world. We're currently suffering under government of the banksters, by the banksters, for the banksters; but, even in the darkest of times, there can be a ray of light.
Follow me past the great orange swirl of satanic pleasure for the details.
The New Zealand Herald has a story up today reporting on the necessity of changing the very definitions of marriage; and not in a bad way.
The words "bride" and "bridegroom" will disappear from official marriage forms if Parliament votes, as expected, on Wednesday to legalise same-sex marriages.
For those who haven't been following NZ politics we're officially in the home stretch for Marriage Equality. The first two readings of the bill have produced lopsided wins for the good guys. (for those keeping score at home, you see the results
here, and
here) If next weeks vote goes as expected New Zealand will be lucky number 13 among countries that have legalized same-sex marriage!
New Zealand has a history of liberalism, but this sort of victory, especially while mired in the extreme conservative governance of the National Party, is a big win no matter how you slice it. Just one more example of how public opinion, worldwide, has seismically shifted on this issue of same-sex marriage and equality.
Now for a little victory dance:
