The Tea Party is demonstrating why it should be called The Know Nothing Party by attacking library funding in Kentucky. All I know about this mischief so far is what I read in this op-ed piece by Al Smith in the News Democrat. Seems The Tea Party is using a wording conflict they found in two separate laws passed many years ago as a basis for a law suit demanding library funding to be rolled back to 1979 levels.
The Tea Party pretends to be all about anti-taxation. What they're all about here is anti-knowledge. If they are successful with what they are attempting in KY, library funding will be cut back so much, many counties will simply have to close their libraries. A brand new library building is nearing completion here in Logan County, thanks in large part to the tireless labor of our recently deceased librarian, Linda Kompanik. A lot of individuals and corporate entities helped make this possible, but the library tax is essential to keeping our Logan County Public Library and all of Kentucky's libraries a thriving part of our communities. Drawing the attention of the Daily Kos community to this Tea Party mischief is the first thing I could think of that I could do to see to it that The Know Nothing Tea Party will ultimately be unsuccessful in their ant-knowledge efforts.
