This NASA MODIS Instrument Aqua Satellite platform imagery of
the lower Great Lakes, taken yesterday (09/29/2014), shows an interesting image
of transport and occurrence of algae/phytoplankton. See lower right
quadrant of image for the lower Great Lakes:

- Extensive evidence of offshore algae in Western Lake Erie, Maumee Bay
and Sandusky Bay
- Interesting transport of turbidity and algae from Ontario rivers on the
east shore of Lake St. Clair along its south shore and then
through to the Detroit River to Lake Erie
- Heavy algae in the near-shore areas of Saginaw Bay complete with
evidence of river/drain inputs to shoreline areas on the east side of
Saginaw Bay
Upon circulating this link to Great Lakes lists, the researchers at the
the Michigan Technological University in Houghton at the Harmful Algal Bloom Mapping, Water Quality, and Public Health project contacted me noting their observation of the same images from yesterday. That project is part of the Great Lakes Observing Network.
Here is their mapping and workproduct for public information about yesterday's NASA image of Great Lakes algae. MTU's product shows Western Lake Erie, Saginaw Bay and Green Bay in Wisconsin.
