What bothered me the most about the 2014 election was the national voter turnout. The New York Times pegged it at 36.3 percent. This was despite a huge effort to turn out voters nationally. So somewhere between 1/2 and 1/3 of eligible voters have determined that I will have to deal with a conservative Congress that wants to take away healthcare, gut worker safety and environmental laws especially those designed to oppose climate change, oppose unions, and continue tax cuts to the highest income groups and big business. I think the solution would be to add two Federal holidays - one in May, one in November so that everyone can have the day off to vote. One proven factor in increasing voter turnout is making it easy to vote. For example, Oregon has mail in ballots - it's a low cost solution that gave a 69.5% turnout in November 2014
If a business or agency wants to stay open on this holiday, they must be able to prove that their workers are voting either by early voting or mail-in ballot.
At this point, I have no idea how this could be implemented, so I'm hoping Daily Kos readers have some ideas.
What would be best? Grass-roots petitioning for a Constitutional Amendment? An introduction of a bill from Congress members friendly to the idea?
