How long has it been since you actually read the intro? In its entirety? Don't you feel a bit sorry for the intro, sitting there all lonely and ignored every week?
WYFP is our community's Saturday evening gathering to talk about our problems, empathize with one another, and share advice, pootie pictures, favorite adult beverages, and anything else that we think might help. Everyone and all sorts of troubles are welcome. May we find peace and healing here. Won't you please share the joy of WYFP by recommending?
Yeah, I'm not above guilt. You knew that.
So, every once in a while, our Mortgage Maven pings us and says, "Hey, you might wanna look at a refi. Rates, yadda yadda. Payments, blah, blah, blah." Usually we are honest with ourselves about being far too lazy to want to even think about it. But, for some reason, earlier this month, we said to each other, "Say, ya 'member that email from The Mortgage Maven? Let's ping her back and see what's up!" Because, really, the first week in January after the holidays have thundered through your finances like a rampaging herd of wildebeests, and have left your accounts trampled and gasping is right when you want to have financial peeps poking around in your shiz, right?
Whatever. Timing's never been our strength.
So after some preliminary digging online, the results of which looked promising, I gave Miss Maven a flick and, sure enough, we can go from 4.875 down to 3.125 and shave some years of the old mortgage by taking it to a 15-year fixed. Great! All that's left is the paperwork!
The paperwork... Oh, holy mother of "and sign, date, and initial here," the paperwork.
And I suddenly remember the point during the last refi when I thought, "I can keep slogging through this paperwork, or I could throw myself on a hill of fire ants. Hmmm..."
And the problem is compounded by the fact that it isn't actually paperwork, anymore. It's all done online. Things are so encrypted that you can't uncrypt them. Links appear and disappear like shooting stars. Passwords don't work. Hand-typed codes that are longer than your car VIN (effing num lock key!!!). Attachments that aren't attached. Even the filling out on line makes me long for a pen and paper. Phone numbers and Social Security Numbers and (EFFING NUM LOCK KEY!!!)
And there's the monthly financial aspect. Our payments go up a chunk. Do we really want that? Is there any possible chance that we will become the type of disciplined people who will overpay to bring the current mortgage down on our own? (<--HAHAHAHAHA!!)
So.
We've just sort of ground to a halt. We each have gazillion-page disclosure paperwork sitting in our inbox, waiting for e-signatures, and we have zero drive to get it done. The rate's locked for a couple more weeks.
The appraiser is coming on Monday.
I think I'll take a nap.
