Freddie Gray being arrested by Baltimore Police
Six officers involved in the arrest and injuries of a 25-year-old Baltimore man, Freddie Gray,
have been suspended after he died in the hospital a week later.
After the initial police reports were released, it became clear that the officers were attempting to cover up exactly how Gray sustained three broken vertebrae, swelling on his brain, and how his spine was reportedly 80 percent severed. In those incident reports, police claimed that Gray "was arrested without force or incident" and that he "suffered a medical emergency" in the back of the police van after his arrest.
The facts aren't adding up.
At a Monday press conference, the attorneys and family of Gray were hoping for answers from the city of Baltimore, but instead got platitudes and promises.
Gray’s attorney, William H. “Billy” Murphy Jr., called the police news conference “bizarre” and added, “We had high expectations because everyone was talking about candor, and we got opacity.” Murphy, the son of a judge and civil rights leader, said that police officials appeared “frightened by the national microscope” and that “they are scrambling for the truth.”
In the timeline released by police, a 30-minute gap exists between when Gray was thrown into the back of a police van and when paramedics were called because of his injuries. Not one credible answer has been given on how Gray sustained those injuries or who caused them.
Until we get answers, we must continue to push for justice in this case.
