Good riddance.
From WaPo:
The head of the Drug Enforcement Administration is expected to resign soon, according to U.S. officials, following revelations about “sex parties” involving prostitutes overseas and other misconduct among its agents.
Michele Leonhart, who has served at the helm of the DEA since 2007, has come under heavy criticism on Capitol Hill since an inspector general report last month documented a series of episodes in which agents hired prostitutes. Agents were also found to have had sex parties with some women hired by drug cartels in Colombia.
[snip]
“After over a decade of serving in top leadership positions at DEA, Administrator Leonhart has been woefully unable to change or positively influence the pervasive ‘good old boy’ culture that exists throughout the agency,” the committee said in a statement. “From her testimony, it is clear that she lacks the authority and will to make the tough decisions required to hold those accountable who compromise national security and bring disgrace to their position.”
GWB appointee Michele Leonhart, career DEA agent turned DEA chief, has been a pain in ass for years. She is of the outdated drug warrior mold who have been putting young people in prison, most for non-violent drug offenses, for decades. She has been trying desperately to continue the drug war even while Obama and Holder have been shifting toward harm reduction policies and away from incarceration policies.
Leonhart has been butting heads with Obama and Holder for awhile now, and now they've told her to hit the road after her DEA agents were caught with cartel-funded prostitutes.
From Wikipedia::
In 2011, the Washington Post reported that "994 people younger than 18 were killed in drug-related violence between late 2006 and late 2010" and that "[i]n 2009, the last year for which there is data, 1,180 children were killed, half in shootings." In response to these statistics, Leonhart declared that while it "may seem contradictory, the unfortunate level of violence is a sign of success in the fight against drugs.”
In 2014, Leonhart openly criticized President Barack Obama's stance on cannabis at a meeting of the National Sheriffs' Association.[11] Marijuana activists and two congressmen have called for her resignation due to her stance on cannabis while some law enforcement leaders have defended her position.
She's also just plain weird in her vapid attempts at making an argument against cannabis legalization. (But what can you expect from a GWB appointee?) Same wikipedia entry.
She also alleged that dog owners should oppose marijuana legalization due to edible products toxicity to animals. However, one study that examined 125 Colorado dogs who had contracted marijuana toxicosis between 2005 and 2010 found that only two dogs died as a result of ingesting marijuana edibles.
I hope the new DEA chief fires the entire DEA force, removes
fascist, unconstitutional, invasive programs, and implements a more Constitutional, harm reduction-oriented agency.
