The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

Monterey Bay, CA
Continued below the orange kelp
So we ran down to Monterey on the 14th for a 3 day trip. There were prodigious quantities of humpback whales visible from the shore along with dolphins and otters, sea birds and tourists. I used a point and shoot through a monocular made from a pair of cheap binos that became terminally uncollimated. Though I was unable to get any shots of whales, I did get one of these guys:
We paid the 10 bux to drive the 17 mile drive where, among other things, there is a "bird rock" that also had its share of pinnipeds:
In addition to sea birds we spotted this junco
singing his heart out in this snag
There were honkers here and there, of course
including this guy who is standing on a perfect square of grass, the "scar" from some ancient hut out on these rocks
and even lizards, such as this little guy
and another nice snag
