An Excerpt From Article Six Of The American Constitution :
. . . " The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.v " . . . The Religious Right Extremists in America have been using the argument for a while now that the framers of our constitution meant this to be a White, Christian Nation. They use this argument in particular when they are being homophobic, racist, women hating, religious bigots.
First of all, they have NOT a foot to stand on with their dark ages argument that the framers of our Constitution were religious bigots . . . as it is so very obvious the framers meant that there was not just ONE religion to rule the governing of our country. Sadly, many of our ' founding fathers ' were actually racist, homophobic, women haters . . . but at least they stood for freedom of and from religion.
And second of all, the Religious Right in America are not even close to being Christians. Like a lot of people in the 50s and 60s, I was raised in Christianity . . . but I absolutely do not remember being taught that Jesus hated anyone or wanted his followers to hate anyone. I am a very spiritual person these days and I believe in spiritual discipline, though I do not believe in anthropomorphising The God Of My Understanding - - - giving it a gender or human characteristics - - - nor do I believe in any organized religion.
What I do believe is that even with some of the egregious flaws that were part of the beginning of this Nation ( i.e., the genocide of American Indians in order to steal their land ), most of the framers of our Constitution were not the religious bigots that the Religious Right Extremists try to say they were.
