I was stunned by Adm. Michael Rogers’s revelation today that it is indisputable that Russia hacked our election. And we’re supposed to act like that didn’t happen? I wrote this to President Obama.
Dear Mr. President,
Today, when the head of the NSA, not the most publicity-seeking organization, revealed that a "nation state," i.e., Russia, hacked our election to produce a Trump win, he essentially stated that our election was not free and fair and that the president-elect it produced is therefore NOT LEGITIMATE.
Our democracy has been hacked; we have sustained a grave act of aggression in a new, 21st century act of war. Our Constitutional order has been violated, the peaceful transfer of power based on the will of the people usurped by Russian sabotage. Russia has precipitated a Constitutional crisis in the United States by a campaign of cyber warfare. To my knowledge, the only Constitutional solution available to us is for the Electoral College to serve the function that the Framers intended for it, namely, to serve as a check on elections gone wrong. They must deny the presidency to Russia's candidate in favor of the other leading vote-getter, who happens to have won the majority of votes.
If there is some other Constitutional solution, besides the unacceptable one of acting as if the Russian attack did not take place, I would like to know what it is. Shall we roll over in the face of a Russian attack and let them win? No patriotic American can wish it so. Russia's attack must not merely be investigated but the result it produced negated. Even Republicans, at least that subset who put country ahead of party, cannot want Russian aggression to determine the outcome of our election.
We are at a moment of unprecedented peril. An adversarial, even enemy, power, in what amounts to an act of war, has attacked us successfully in order to determine the outcome of our election. The conclusion is inescapable: Donald Trump was not legitimately elected. He cannot be allowed to assume the office of president.
I intend to do all that I can to encourage others to contact you and their representatives, Democrat and Republican alike, to take a stand against this Russian aggression and its illegitimate outcome. I urge you to do what you can to raise the profile of this issue and to prevent Russia's candidate from becoming your successor. I know this will be politically difficult, but it must be done.
I am incredulous that this information was withheld until AFTER the election. I am incredulous that we are supposed to disregard this information and regard Trump’s election as legitimate. He must not be allowed to assume the presidency.
Tilting at windmills? So, what’s the alternative? Ignoring Russian sabotage and letting them pick our president?
