A coalition of progressive groups has been organizing a quick response to Bush's plans for escalation. It's nationwide, it's tomorrow, and it depends on ordinary people like us to get out there and do it.
lawyerDan provided the details in a diary late last night that drew limited notice, so I'll repeat it here.
True Majority, the group founded by Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream) has pulled together quite a coalition calling for emergency demonstrations Thursday in opposition to the Bush plan to escalate the Iraq War, under the banner: "America Says No!"
The groups that have endorsed the call include United for Peace and Justice, the umbrella group for the antiwar movement, Democracy for America, the group that came out of the Dean campaign, Progressive Democrats of America, the National Organization for Women, three national Christian denominations and about a dozen more groups. They have announced a national surge of protest under the banner "America Says NO to more Troops!"
It is hard to tell exactly how many demonstrations there will be, but it appears that there may be more than one hundred.
MoveOn does not seem to be a part of that coalition, but put out its own call for emergency demonstrations on Thursday.
Moveon
There are more than 500 actions already posted and they're sure to be growing by the hour. It doesn't take much time or work to join one; just show up for a few minutes or an hour. The True Majority link has signs that are easy to download and print, making it even easier.
If there's nothing in your area, log in at either site to host an event. If no one else comes, so be it. But even a few people can make a difference. Hundreds or thousands of people driving by your sign will notice it and think once again about what we're doing in Iraq.
We need to use every strategy we can to stop this war: emails, LTE's, votes, and protests. Small local actions often draw more coverage in daily newspapers than worldwide events.
This time, let's just say NO.
