Love Letter For My Soldier
I sing for you each morning
I pray for you each night
I spend my days atoning
Trying to make things right
I want you to come back to me
Safe and sound and whole
I want you to come back with your soul
Promise me you never did me wrong
While you were away
Promise me you didn’t fall from grace
Promise me you never strayed
Promise me you never raped a child
Promise me you never stoled
Promise me you never tortured
Promise me you kept your soul
I sing for you each morning
I ache for you each night
I spend my days atoning
I pray you’ll be all right
Please come home to me my soldier
Please come home
Please come home
Songs From the Heartland
2007
Confession: I do not have a loved one serving in Iraq. I am not a military wife, but I am a military child. My father served in WWII and my father-in-law survived Pearl Harbor. My great uncle was at Verdun and another uncle lost his life piloting jets for the Air Force. My mother-in-law served in WWII. They all served with honor. My family has a strong tradition of service, but my sons will not follow that tradition. They will not be sacrificed to this war based on lies and greed. They will not be fed into a black hole of despair. This song is for every soldier, for our soldiers and for our country. Please come back to us, we need you desperately. We need to know you are not lost. We need to be able to love and cherish you, to see in you our collective humanity, our character, our honor, our national soul. Please come home.
