For too long in this country we have been held hostage by a delusional and, in some cases insane minority regarding everything from our foreign policy, to social programs, education and health care.
Now the sane yet angry minority is speaking up more and more. The mis-informed or outright ignorant 50-something% majority in the middle doesn't like to think about the real truth too much. They're too busy watching American Idol. Anybody who thinks that by de-funding the troops in the field the soldiers and marines will be left standing in the middle of the desert without bullets or gas for their Humvee's is woefully mis-informed.
The facts are there for anybody to search and read. The opinions have been flying around here like bugs to a "porch zapper"...I'm just hoping that you will follow me below the fold to join me on Memorial Day to make a statement. I'm gonna make mine...are you gonna make yours?
I'm sitting here right now looking at my two pieces of white cardboard that I am going to fashion into a sign that reads on one side; "Support The Troops" & on the other side; "Impeach 'Commander Guy'".
I'm gonna pull a lazy boy chair out of my garage that is sitting next to my drum-set. I reconnoitered it from a junk pile across the street that was set out there by another working poor family like mine who were forced to move because they couldn't afford the $850-a-month rent, I guess. I don't know...I feel guilty because I didn't bother to find out, probably because I'm too busy looking for work in an economically-depressed area and talking to you people.
I'm gonna sit down in that chair and read "The Rum Diary" by Hunter S. Thompson because I promised my wife I wouldn't spend $15 right now on Amazon to get Al Gore's latest book "Assault On Reason" because we're going to need pull-ups for our daughter soon.(She's still potty-training but ya never know...you parents know what I mean.)
I am going to sit there with my head held high and respond to any and all comments, abuse, ridicule and inquiries that might come my way. I don't know what to expect. I've never done this kind of thing before. That doesn't matter. What does matter is the lives of our troops in Iraq. What does matter is the innocent men, women and children who happened to be born in that country that only want what I want...a roof over our heads, food in the cupboard and a glimmer of hope that someday, somehow things will get better. That's what us humans do. We survive. We carry on. We live, learn and love and try to give back whenever we can...if we're one of the good people.
If you're not one of the good people (and I know that doesn't include anyone here on DailyKos...just getting my frustrations out) and you only want to adher to the pathetic motto: "God helps those who help themselves" then I only have pity for you. Pity that you are really that blind. Pity that you don't get the simple fact that you can't take it with you. I only wish your kind the best, because you're gonna need it.
For those of you who will be joining me in spirit I say thank you. Thank you for standing up for what's right. Thank you for keeping the spark alive that gives humanity hope that one day things really will be better...for everybody. Thank you for reaffirming my love for my fellow men and women who only want to have peace, love and a sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves that doesn't want to hurt them, take advantage of them, judge them or toss them aside because they "don't belong".
We all belong...we all matter...we are all equal and we will prevail if we can just stand back for a moment and count our blessings and help those who might have fewer blessings.
After all...what good are blessings if we can't share them with the ones who matter, our fellow human beings?
Let's make this Memorial Day one to remember forever. I know I will. How about you?
As Always...Peace ;-)>
Update:
I'm gonna re-post this on Saturday just to get some more input and response and to hopefully lend to a sense of community here. I'll probably add a few lines so it's not the EXACT same diary. Is that ok with everybody? I'm not a mojo-holic...I just wanna keep this fire burning. Seriously.
Thanks for all of the comments and reactions so far. I feel blessed to be a part of this place.
You guys rock!!!
As Always...Peace ;-)>
