Majority Leader Reid, Madam Speaker Pelosi;
I write to you as a concerned American and as a concerned Democrat. Last night, as Senator Reid pointed out in his written response to President Bush’s speech, the President intends to run out the clock, leaving the hard decisions to the next President. However, what has also become clear is that the Democratic Leadership and many others in Congress lack the same courage, the same will, as the President to make the hard decisions.
The time is long past for oversight, the time is gone for compromise, the American people have spoken time and time again and what they want is OUT of Iraq, they want our troops home. Despite poll after poll that tells us the mood of the country on this issue, your respective bodies in Congress have failed to fight the fight. Both of you personally have failed to lead the fight. We beg you act. we plead for you, our leaders, to fight for this issue. Yet all we get is talk and capitulation. Stop talking about who is to blame, stop talking about where we went wrong, how you were fooled, how you were lied to. We have heard the speeches of the past, we know the causes, stop hemming and hawing and ACT!
We don’t need another hearing about the Iraq war, the evidence is long gathered, the facts well known. It is the tragedy of a generation, the shame of a nation, and the only move left us is to end it. Yes, Iraq will be left in chaos. Guess what, it’s already chaos. We caused it, but we can’t fix it. To continue in a fight that cannot be won by force is not worth the precious lives of our Service Members; it dishonors their sacrifice and diverts them from the fight they should be in.
Force the President to with draw. Refuse him funding. Refuse funding for an ongoing occupation. Demand a comprehensive plan for redeployment with dead certain firm timelines. Do it now and keep doing it until the President gets the message. If you can’t get out of the way of those willing to fight this fight. Speeches and platitudes are not enough. We have the President for worthless speeches and hollow platitudes; we don’t need them from Congress as well.
Sincerely,
