I read an illuminating story in The American Prospect June 2008 print edition.
http://www.prospect.org/...
The basic plot is:
- software company overworks staff to cut costs
- staff do all the overtime without compensation, as is usual today since fewer and fewer workers are "entitled" to overtime
- company fires them all and tells them that they are being replaced by engineers from India
- the engineers from India will be paid $5,000 per year
- the fired engineers were making $80,000 per year
- in order to get a severance package the fired workers must train the new engineers to management's satisfaction
This is the type of story that needs more coverage. I am not opposed to immigration at all. But I am opposed to well-educated, well-trained, hard working loyal employees being booted and replaced by low wage competitors, very low wage. This is not a wage concession, or a wage freeze. This is outright theft.
And what does it say about all the blather from the media that immigrants take jobs that Americans don't want? And what does it say about all the blather from the ruling class that hi-tech skills and education are the only way to "protect American jobs"?
