Now if you are a vegetarian or against hunting and trapping. This diary might not be for you.
Mike Hucklebee brought up the subject of eating sqirrels on his campaign stump. If this will gain him any votes. I have no idea. However it might be interesting if someone followed him around with a pot of squirrel stew for him to sample, kind of like the Lieberman Kiss Float.
But eating squirrel brought up memories of squirrel and rabbit stews that poorer families in our small town hunted and cooked.
More below the fold.
The stews were delicious. I've never hunted really per say, but I love to fish when I can. We live near plenty of woods and wildlife here in Oregon and it occurred to me, I could hunt squirrels and rabbits and get used to doing that in case we had a major depression and the economy totally tanked.
I know rabbits shouldn't be eaten in the summer as they get tapeworms and such, and I'm sure I can look online and find hunting tips, or talk with my hunting friends, but I think it helps illustrate where we might be headed and where we've been.
Rabbits are sold locally for meat and lots of people eat rabbit. It used to be a staple of our diet.
Here's some recipes:

We're disassociated with where our meats come from, maybe the safest meat is meat we either grow or hunt ourselves.
Do you grow rabbits or other animals for food?
Have you eaten what others might consider unusual meats?
For the squirrel lovers, and anti-hunters (which I understand) I can offer this cute squirrel pic of squirrels relaxing when humans aren't around:
