Update [2008-2-5 2:27:38 by andgarden]: not that anyone will see this, but SUSA took another poll today, and found an even closer race:
Q: If the Republican Primary for President of the United States were today, would you vote for ...(names rotated) Mike Huckabee? John McCain? Mitt Romney? Ron Paul? Or some other Republican?
A: Huckabee 11% McCain 39% Romney 38% Paul 5% Other 5% Undecided 2%
That's way up from January 28th.
SUSA observes:
CA Conservatives Race to Romney, But Is That Enough To Leapfrog McCain on Primary Eve? 24 hours till votes are counted in the California Republican Primary, Mitt Romney has pulled close enough to John McCain that the contest should best be characterized as too-close-to-call, according to SurveyUSA's 12th pre-primary tracking poll.
Why this sudden rush of support to Romney? It looks like outside of the South, Romney has convinced Republicans that the race is between him and John McCain, and that McCain just can't be trusted. Hilarious, I know, coming from multiple choice Mitt, but so it goes.
Romney has gotten endorsements from just about every creepican from Rick Santorum to Sean Hannity. And Mittens has the cash to tell the base about it. Recently he went on the air with two ads, one radio and one TV. I think the force of his message could be pretty strong with Republican primary voters, especially on top of those endorsements.
First he compares the Mac to Hillary Clinton:
Notice how he throws in Bill Clinton's jujutsu gushy niceness about McCain at the end? I like to think Bill said what he said intentionally.
And on the radio, more of the same:
I would much rather go up against Mitt in November, and if he makes a good enough showing tomorrow, that's still possible.
