I'm afraid that the Ayers stuff is shaping up to be the Rev. Wright thing all over again. The media circus will run the story 24/7 discussing 'possible connections' between Obama and terrorist organizations.
The only way to fight this is by going on the offensive in the slimiest way possible. Do a 'Republicans = closet Nazis' ad.
Yes, it will be outrageous, every pundit will ridicule it but they won't be able to shut up about it.
Especially if the ad is done right.
Bring to the front the eerie similarities between 'Homeland' and 'Fatherland'. Mention Prescott Bush's ties with the Nazis. Mix in the pictures of Auschwitz and Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. Bring up Schwartzeneger's Nazi roots etc. Compare the 'Patriot Act' to the 'Enabling Act'. This will generate a shitstorm that American politics hasn't seen in decades. The ad will of course be produced by an 'independent group' and Obama will renounce and distance himself from it.
It will have an advantage of sucking out all air from the Republican bullshit patriotism theme right before their convention. Time it right and nobody will pay any attention to their convention because all pundits will be busy getting outraged about an unfair attack on the Republican party.
Watch the support for the Rethugs sink into oblivion as talking heads focus on the human rights and constitutional abuses during the Bush years.
I'm afraid I see this as the only way to take the punch out of the Ayers/Wright nonsense. The rethugs are already busy painting Democrats in general and Obama in particular as clost Muslim terrorist sympathizers. Complaining to the FCC won't do. Boycotting advertisers won't do. The best defense in gutter politics is not just going on the offensive but doing so with a full frontal assault. The more outrageous the better. Facts and accuracy is of secondary importance.
