Thoughts on a current event and quickly written and poorly phrased suggestions
There used to be a joke saying that a republican is a Democrat who's been mugged. Now, I believe it should be altered to say that a Democrat is a republican who has tried to use their health insurance. The idea is that one only believes themselves to have health insurance until they try to use it.
On another note entirely, I see where many legislators were opposed to allowing abortions to be paid for by our tax dollars. I wonder how loudly they'll holler when they realize that our tax dollars pay for abortions in countries we support with foreign aid. In fact, at least one country that receives aid from the US has universal health care while we do not.
Here's a thought: do not give US tax dollars to countries with a better safety nets than exist in the US.
Here's another: Do not give US tax dollars or contracts to so-called American companies who specialize in out-sourcing and off-shoring; let's define what is an American company, maybe by using a percentage of their workforce that must be citizens of the US.
I read once that any public assistance cannot or rather should not exceed that which is received by working in the lowest-paying jobs, otherwise no one will work at them. I's suspect that foreign assistance should have a similar rule applied, i.e., the recipient of foreign aid should not have a social safety net greater than that of the donor, otherwise, why would they ever change and who, in the donor nation, would believe the donation is fair?
