I am going to make this very brief.
Last week our State House passed Civil Unions 33-17. The Bill's Senate counterpart is now in the hands of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The SJC is now currently weighing the bill. Theoretically, the vote is 3-2, with Senators Takamine, Taniguchi and Nishihara (all D's) offering soft support for Civil Unions while Senators Gabbard (D) and Slom (R) strongly opposed. Senator Bunda (D) is undecided.
Senators Takamine, Taniguchi, Nishihara and Bunda have been inundated with calls from Far Rightists who seeks to intimidate them into submission. As we have learned from our 1998 battle for gay rights, most of the intimidation is coming from the mainland.
I'm sick of us fighting against a disproportionate amount of resources. It is time to fight fire with fire.
Please help us gently persuade these fellow Democrats to vote their initial position, which is in support of civil unions.
Senator Robert Bunda 808-586-6090
Senator Clarence Nishihara 808-586-6970
Senator Brian Taniguchi 808-586-6460
Senator Dwight Takamine 808-586-7335
If the SJC sends the bill to the Senate floor, it will likely pass sending it to Governor Lingle, who will likely veto it, but has said in the past that she is supportive of unions. So it's 50-50, please fight for equality now
