There are actually two types of shows I'd like to see:
--one that allows instant fact-checks
--one that is all about fact-checks
It drives me nuts when I see a show like Chris Matthews or the Sunday discussion shows, and people are allowed to simply get away with lying. It's great later when Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, or Keith or Rachel, call them out on it by assembling the facts, but the point is that it shouldn't have to wait.
To take an egregious example, when Cheney says, "I never said Saddam caused 9/11," the host or the opponent should say, "Let's check that right now. We have 20 people within 20 feet of us with an internet connection." The opponent can say, "Whoever is wrong about that can apologize to the other right now on national TV."
Let the chips fall where they may, but stop acting like the internet age isn't here. Not everything lends itself to this kind of checking, of course, such as big issues like health care or climate change, but smaller parts of those issues, like the average current cost or the state of arctic ice, can be determined instantly.
This leads into the other type of show I'd like to see, something like Mythbusters for political rhetoric. Websites that offered this service (such as factcheck.org) did extremely well during the election season, and we've seen Jon and Stephen and Rachel and Keith do it very well and in an extremely entertaining way. With the right hosts, it could be not just good television, but another tool in the fight to keep the political world honest. Nobody would want to be highlighted and busted, and if done right and with pizazz, it would then show up on regular newscasts, like some of Jon's and Stephen's stuff does.
Explosives would help, of course, just like on Mythbusters. Maybe they could blow up a computer...
