Today, conservative leaders unveiled their "Mount Vernon Manifesto". It's a good document, but if conservatives really believed it they would support President Obama and the Democratic Party. My response is below.
The Democratic Party believes very strongly in limited government based on the rule of law. Over the last nine years, we have witnessed a conservative-reactionary assault on limited government and the rule of law. It started with the suppression of votes in Florida in 2000, and continued with an oppressive federal government that claimed the right to jail American citizens at home without the constitutional protection of habeas corpus and torture people abroad. The Democratic Party (at least the majority of it) opposed these attacks on the Constitution, and the Obama Administration has stood for limited government and the rule of law both here and abroad.
The change put forward by the Democratic Party is a change to limited government and the rule of law, as well as a government that "provides for economic opportunity, establishes true religious liberty, and maintains and flourishing society of republican self-government". Providing for economic opportunity means taking steps to stop a Second Great Depression, rather than standing on the sidelines, hoping the government and nation fails in order to regain power. True religious liberty means religious liberty for all, and not fear of persecution because of your belief (or lack thereof). And a flourishing society of republican self-government means making sure that voting is fair, rather than trying to disenfranchise as many as possible that are likely to vote against you.
The Democratic Party believes in free enterprise and market solutions, supported by a strong, but limited government that protects Americans against the rich and powerful who would take advantage of them.
The Democratic Party supports our national interest in advancing freedom and opposing tyranny by following and strengthening international law, diplomacy, and cooperation.
The Democratic Party defends family, neighborhood, community. and faith. A free people should be able to form their families and worship as they wish, without concern that they will lose their jobs and their rights because of who they love or how they worship.
The Democratic Party defends our neighborhoods and our communities from those who wish to destroy them in pursuit of profit.
Lastly, the Democratic Party stands for the inherent equality of each and every American, including those who, for much too long, were considered less American by the powers that were. We are all Americans, and we all have an equal stake under the law, and in our society.
