I need a little help everyone. I am composing a letter to my state senator, a Republican and a no vote in the fight for single payer in my state. I would like some feedback and any corrections anyone can find. I am looking for the missive to be positive and stress the absolute need for a single payer system. I am keeping the senator's name confidential.
This is about my own son's predicament. I feel the Senator should know what kind of grief she and her business buddies are causing us all. please offer suggestions.
Dear Senator Earle,
I am contacting you to encourage you to look carefully at the health care situation in (state). I am mom to four sons ages 28 to 22. My 25 yr old is disabled with schizophrenia and my 23 year old is epileptic. His life is tough. Lots of expensive meds, he cannot drive and he cannot get a job with health care coverage included. He wants to work and is right now employed at (deleted) as a part time maintenance man. He will not be working there during the summer months for obvious reasons. He was, as of February 5th, not eligible for Medicaid. He had been on it for a year. He will now be forced to apply for disability because his meds are $800/month and there are not many options other than that. We will apply for free medicines from the manufacturers but that is a toss up whether he will receive them or not.
I hope you see the waste in our system this is producing. I would venture that many people on disability are on it because of the health care issue. I understand that (state) is considering a single payer system and that the municipalities have shown that they stand to save millions of dollars in health care expenses. I also understand that you are not considering voting yes on this issue. I ask you to reconsider. Besides the demonstrated savings exhibited to you, there is an unseen value besides the ethical considerations to the constituents you represent. My son and many others could be working at low paying jobs, waiting and learning to achieve higher stations in life, if they had health care. My son. Toby, is willing to be patient and live frugally while waiting for better opportunity to present itself. He cannot, his health issues are too severe to allow for not having health insurance. This is tragic for him and wasteful for our society. I urge you to help us get a single payer system in place as soon as possible. I know you must see the benefits to municipalities, employers and the populace. You cannot deny that. You should aspire to become part of the movement towards a modern, effective, progressive system that helps all residents reach ahead to a better life. (state) can be a driver in implementing advanced health care coverage for the citizens and the citizens of the state deserve to have what we work so hard for... a life that includes adequate health care coverage. I beg you to consider our plight along with the benefits you bestow on the monied of your circle, and for once vote for the people ahead of big business.
Respectfully.
I think the end might be a little to direct hence my hesitation at sending this and my plea for some feedback. Thanks to all who reply
