I was down on the riverfront at the Farmers' Market on Saturday (diary about it here), but I must have gone home too soon.
I have been looking and listening for anything around that might be related to the Occupy movement, but hadn't heard a peep. The closest thing was 60 miles away in Iowa City and I don't have transportation. Imagine my surprise when I went to the local mini-mart and saw this one the front page of the Sunday paper: Occupy Quad-Cities draws crowd.
So I got online and was pleased to find out that 200 people from both Iowa and Illinois converged in LeClaire Park in Davenport for a rally. The Rock Island folks met up at their court house and walked across the bridge to the park where the Davenport contingent was waiting. Bill Gluba, mayor of Davenport, spoke passionately about the inequities of our system. It was neat to see a city official in the midst of the 99%. It was also a hoot to see them all sitting politely in the seats in front of the bandshell while he spoke. They cheered at the appropriate times, but were quite the attentive audience. :-)
There were all kinds of people there, including those who were for a consumption tax and other RW and libertarian stuff. It looks like there were conversations among them and those of a more liberal persuasion, but no real confrontations.
There may be more events planned but I'm not sure how to find out when and where. I do wonder if the city and the mayor would be so helpful if people decided to camp out in the park. It's really close to US Bank and Wells Fargo, both of which used to be local banks until they were swallowed up/bought out. Frankly, at this time of year, I wouldn't want to be camping out on the riverfront. It gets wicked cold and windy down there...
