SUSA has been known to occasionally give wacky results, but it's bad practice to dismiss polls with results we don't like. And I really don't like this latest poll out of Minnesota. Yes, the President is in fine shape, but equality prospects are not:
Q: If an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution were on the ballot, that defines marriage as between one man and one woman, would you vote FOR the amendment? Against the amendment? Or not vote on the measure?
A: For 51% Against 40% Not Vote 8%
Potential optimism on the flip.
If there's any good news, it's that the young are with us and so are cell phone voters. Meanwhile, the partisan composition of this poll is unexpected: there are more respondents who identify themselves as Republicans than Democrats. Also, a recent Star-Tribune poll found very different results.
But I have to sat that I am very disturbed by SUSA's findings. On questions of marriage equality, the robopollsters have proven to be far more prescient historically. My working hypothesis is that people are far more willing to admit their bigotry by "pressing 1" than to a human.
Thus my title. We should be prepared to lose again. And I don't know if there's anything we can do to change that except wait for time to pass.
