We're sorta volunteer-less today, so I thought I'd take it upon myself to fill in and post our Friday Open Thread.
Before anything else, I'd like to point your attention to the NFTT fundraiser currently underway.
Netroots For The Troops™ is a project of Netroots for the Troops, Inc., a Virginia non-profit corporation. Netroots For The Troops™ raises money for the assembly, mailing and delivery of care packages to American military in war zones, and to provide assistance to military families in the United States. Netroots For The Troops, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization.
Our Genealogy and Family History Community group has established an account for which we are challenged to raise $2000 that will go toward the purchase of items included in care packages to be sent to our overseas troops. These packages include such items as
Baby wipes
Mechanix globes
LED flashlights
Gel shoe insoles
Goop Cleaning Gel
Powdered energy drinks
Gel energy food packets
DVDs and CDs
Letters to the soldiers
In total, it's hoped 600 care packages can be shipped, but the cost of the items included in the packages, plus shipping costs overseas, will run about $100,000.
Currently, we are only 15% to our group's goal, so every donation, big or small, would help tremendously. Can you help out with this worthy cause?
On the genealogy front, it's been slow going with the one family group of my husband's that Ive been working on. The problem is that I have to order the microfilms of the marriage indexes (6 microfilms of those), then wait 2-3 weeks for those to come in, then get the time to review them, then order the microfilms of the actual licenses (44 microfilms of those), then wait another 2-3 weeks for those to come in, etc., etc. It's horribly tedious, kind of like watching paint dry, but it's the best I can do considering the original documents are in North Carolina, and I'm in Illinois. And in the end, I don't know if I'm going to be able to find the one concrete piece of evidence I need to make the family connection, or if I'm going to have to rely on the "preponderance of evidence". It's looking like it'll probably end up the latter.
Oh well. I guess I've got the rest of my life to work this out.
So, we're looking for volunteers to host our weekly Friday Open Threads. It takes no talent whatsoever to host - I am a prime example of that! It's fun. You can blab away about your favorite research topic to your heart's content - and there's no one to stop you. Au contraire, we're such genealogy geeks here, we'll probably be fascinated!
The schedule is currently thus:
May 13 ... larmos
May 20 ... figbash
May 27...open
June 3 ... open
Etc, etc, into infinity
Volunteers? Volunteers? Anyone? Bueller??
The floor is open ......
