On Monday, September 26th, the United Electrical Workers (UE) will be Marching with other Pittsburgh unions and community groups for a March for Jobs and Workers’ Rights at Noon
This is the text of the leaflet announcing a March I received from Robin Alexander, the Director of International Affairs of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE). The UE is holding their 72nd National Convention in Pittsburgh starting on Sunday (today) through Thursday.
All the Delegates of the United Electrical Workers will be rallying, and we are Loud and Proud!
March for Jobs and Workers' Rights
On Monday, Sept. 26 at 12:00 noon, UE convention delegates will join members of other Pittsburgh unions and community groups in a March for Jobs and Workers’ Rights.
We will gather at the front entrance of the Wyndham Grand Hotel on Commonwealth Place and begin the march promptly at noon. We will march up Liberty Avenue and 5th Avenue, stopping briefly at the Verizon Wireless Store to support the continuing struggle of CWA union members for a fair contract. We will continue the march to Grant Street where we will rally in support of workers' struggles at three adjacent buildings.
The Koppers Building, where SEIU members are in a battle with Cawley Security, whose anti-union policies are keeping down wages and benefits for building security officers.
AT&T, where CWA members are fighting layoffs by a profitable corporation
at a time when our country desperately needs to be retaining and adding
jobs for economic recovery.
The U.S. Postal Service, which is planning to end Saturday mail delivery
and lay off 120,000 workers. Members of the National Association of Letter
Carriers (NALC) are resisting these cuts.
We'll hear from members of these unions about their struggles, as well as from community leaders. To turn our economy around, we need more jobs – jobs that provide decent wages and benefits. We're proud to stand in solidarity with all working people who are fighting for a workers' economic recovery.
Make note, the Convention is at the Wyndham Grand Hotel. That is a Union represented (UNITE HERE) workforce hotel, whose members are currently negotiating a contract. Be sure to do a walk through on your way to the March with Union attire or buttons on display there in a display of solidarity. This map will show the way.
I plan to go to Pittsburgh from Erie for the March to participate and take pictures before I head back for work that afternoon. I will share a few pictures on the Daily Kos afterwards.
